Tilling the Heart: A Contemplative Approach to Healing from White Supremacy Culture

In a culture of urgency, reactivity, and pronouncement, the work of racial justice can feel inaccessible, overwhelming, and exhausting. While it will always be challenging and require mutual bravery, engaging in healing and repair with activated and triggered nervous systems might not take us far. Blessed Audre Lorde reminds us that “the master’s tool will never dismantle the master’s house… they may allow us temporarily to beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change.”

How might we rediscover the ancient tools of our contemplative lineages in order to dismantle the oppression we perpetuate and experience from within the heart?

Facilitated by Rev. Dr. Matta Ghaly. By donation only (no one is turned away for lack of funds). For more information or to register visit mattaghaly.com/tillingtheheart.

Conversation with "Reclaim our Vote" founder Andrea Miller and Training in Postcard Writing to Voter Suppression States

We are again invited to work with "Reclaim our Vote," a grassroots, 501(c)(3) campaign that focuses on increasing voter turnout through postcards, texts, and phone banking in voter suppression states.

As the founding board member of the Center for Common Ground, executive director of People Demanding Action, and founding president of the National Women’s Political Caucus of Virginia, Andrea has expertise in voting rights, climate, and the Equal Rights Amendment. In 2008 she was the Democratic nominee for the Virginia 4th congressional district. This event is being co-sponsored by Spirit of Grace and EcoFaith Recovery. "The Land is Not Empty" Book Study

This book study will read and discuss The Land is Not Empty: Following Jesus in Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery by Sarah Augustine. Led by Pastor Janet Parker and Scott Shurtleff jointly for Spirit of Grace and EcoFaith Recovery, we will unpack the ongoing harm done by the Doctrine of Discovery — a set of fifteenth-century papal bulls that gave European monarchs the legal right to seize lands they "discovered" and enslave the Indigenous people they found there, all in the name of Christ. Augustine issues a powerful call to address the root causes of a religious, legal, and political legacy that continues to devastate Indigenous peoples around the globe and our planetary ecology.

This series runs on Tuesdays, February 20-March 26, from 6:30-7:45 pm on Zoom. Registration deadline is February 14.

What are your reflections following Director Vinci's sermon on this topic and our communal reconciliation service this past Wednesday? What do you consider to be a healthy understanding of reconciliation?
